Does anyone know of some software that I could use to search my own local collections of digital books? It would be nice to be able to use the archive xml files for records and then be able to search for title, author, etc. or be able to just browse the collection.

"extract" which is part of libextractor can collect some such metainfo; "doodle" is a query front-end for libextractor databases. Check out http://www.gnunet.org

If you want to do proper cataloging consider to use the tool set provided by http://www.indexdata.dk (idzebra and yaz).
